Tuesday morning, I stopped at the coffee shop and glanced over the selection of teas, trying to remember what varieties Martha had in her cabinet.

I ordered her an English breakfast tea, and I got a tall drip coffee for myself.

Dinner at her house had been unexpected and wonderful. Not only was she a good cook, I loved being around her.

While I couldn’t justify having dinner with her every night, I might be able to swing a lunch with her once or twice a week. If I invited others from the department, it definitely wouldn’t be a date.

Halfway to the office, my phone rang. “Hey, Lia, what’s up?”

“How’s the new job?”

“So far, so good.”

Ophelia enjoyed being a little sister. “Do you have a cute secretary who sits on the edge of your desk to take memos?”

“Did you suffer a head trauma? You’re aware of what decade this is, aren’t you?”

Bubbling laughter came through the line. “You’re so fun to tease. I’m headed to class. I’ll talk to you later. Maybe you can buy me dinner.”

“Sure. Text me. Dinner sounds good.” As the big brother, I made sure she enjoyed a nice dinner out every so often.

As the little sister, she called to tease me just for fun.

I made it to the office before Martha. It wasn’t a competition. The only important thing to me was getting to see her for a few minutes before others made it into the office.

I set the tea on her desk and waited.

Seven minutes later, Martha stepped into her office and smiled when her gaze landed on the cup of tea. Why was I trying to score points with someone who I was not going to ask out?

She picked up the cup and walked into my office. “Do you sleep at all?”

I watched as she sipped her tea. My aim was to figure out her favorite and make that part of her mornings.

“English Breakfast. Are you rotating through all the types of tea they have?”

I stood, which put her eye-level with my chest. “Until I figure out your favorite.” That sounded way too much like flirting.

She bit her bottom lip, then held out my tie. “You left this.”

“I hadn’t even noticed.”

“Not dating would be simpler if items of clothing weren’t being exchanged somehow.” She looked up at me, her lashes shrouding those green eyes.

I reached for the tie, wrapping my hand around hers. “I could joke that I’d intentionally left it so I could get another free dinner.” What was I doing? I yanked my hand back. “But I didn’t. My mind was just on other things.”

“Well, I’ll let you work. When you want me—”

I wanted her. I wanted to sit next to her and hear her laugh. I wanted to feel her soft lips dancing against mine. And I wanted to hold her while she talked about all things Christmas and those green eyes twinkled. “I’m sure they have a good reason for the company policy, but I don’t like it.” I’d said too much and moved away before I followed through on my thoughts.
